NURSING ASSISTANT

JOB SUMMARY

He/She is responsible for the care of the residents in a designated area of the facility. RESPONSIBILITIES

It is to be understood that the Nursing Assistant works by general, consistent, pre-arranged "Primary" group assignments as the basis for each shift worked, but must be able to accept changes and adapt to added assignment as the need arises. 1.      Signs in per facility protocol.

6.      After meal, assist resident to wash hands and face, return to their room and toilet as needed.

7.      Assists in dining areas as assigned. Offers assistance to residents as needed. Offers substitutions for items not eaten well by any resident. Promotes atmosphere conducive to increased nutritional intake for each resident in the dining room.

8.      For those residents unable to go to the dining room, assists in service, assisting and supervising meal service as assigned.

9.      Assists in transporting used trays to the kitchen following appropriate infection control policies and procedures.

10.    Assists residents to plan their time to enable them to be well cared for as well as attend their desired functions during the shift. (i.e. activities, visits with each other and their families, outings, meals, quiet times, etc.)

11.    Answers call lights timely assisting with care as indicated. Keeps call lights available for the residents.

12.    Encourages and motivates residents to participate in recreational activity of body and mind.

13.    Provides and keeps fresh water and fluids available for the residents at all times. Offers fluids at least every 2 hours or each time in the room, when appropriate.

14.    Timely serves and provides assistance with between meal nourishments as indicated.

15.    Follows bath and whirlpool schedules as outlined for each resident. Do nail care, wash hair, shave, etc. to assure personal hygiene practices are always followed.

16.    Checks all residents frequently and at least every 2 hours assuring the resident is repositioned, turned, toileted, clean, safe, etc. Provides intervention as needed to provide a safe clean environment.

17.    Checks all residents daily for condition of skin, reporting findings to Licensed Staff assigned to unit.

18.    Assists licensed staff when needed to position residents in need of treatments.

19.    Keeps hand rolls and positioning devices in place as needed and as indicated for each resident.

20.    Assists residents to bed for naps or night sleep as needed. Provides a quiet restful and safe atmosphere when residents are resting.

21.    Takes and records vital parameters as assigned. Assists with weekly and monthly weights as assigned.

22.    Cleans and properly arranges all bedroom furniture to include keeping the residents orderly, clean, and following infection control guidelines.

Performs a variety of related duties in resident areas. Cleans and services assigned areas and equipment; efficient expenditures of soap, polishes and similar supplies; and keeps nursing facility in clean and orderly manner. Services are performed within every department of the facility and are planned with all departments.

EDUCATION

Must be able to read, write and follow oral and written instructions.

QUALIFICATIONS

1.         Previous experience preferable but not essential.

2.         Worker receives on-the-job training with supervision.

3.       Must have some knowledge in the use of cleaning devices such as brooms, mops, buffers and other cleaning equipment.

4.         Has an interest in learning, ability to cooperate, and is willing to work under supervision.

5.         Must work scheduled hours each week, which may include working weekends and holidays.

6.         Must have a pre-employment and an annual Tuberculosis screening examination.

RESPONSIBILITIES

1.         To execute duties under the direction and supervision of the Director of Nurses and/or Administrator and Housekeeping Supervisor according to assignment.

2.         To keep the nursing facility in a clean and sanitary condition in order to provide for the welfare and care of the residents in a healthful environment.

3.       Must have a genuine interest in working with geriatrics.

4.         Willingness to perform routine, repetitive tasks on a continuous basis, and perform tasks despite frequent interruptions.

5.         Ability to perform tasks with due consideration for residents in area.

6.         Initiative and judgment involved in maintaining assigned area in clean and orderly condition.

7.         Works under close supervision performing simple, standardized tasks.

8.         Performs other tasks as assigned.

9.         Attends required staff in-services, meetings, orientation, and continuing education activities as required.

10.       Is aware of and adheres to Patient’s Bill of Rights and confidentiality of patient information including HIPAA regulations.

11.       Interacts with patients and family members, co-workers, clinical and ancillary staff in a non-judgmental, supportive and calm manner.

12.       Is aware of Patient Abuse Reporting Law.

13.       Participates as assigned in the orientation of new staff and demonstrates a positive, helpful and enthusiastic attitude.

Functions related to cleaning.

1.       Dust furniture with damp cloth or polishing cloth daily; straighten furniture.

2.       Dust light fixtures outside and inside, dust windowsills, baseboards and beds, clean all door vents.

3.         Empty and wash ashtrays and wastebaskets.

4.       Dry mop floors in residents' rooms then wet mop rooms, if assigned.

5.       Clean wash basins, commodes, polish chrome fixtures in bathrooms, wash all mirrors, and spot clean walls.

6.         Clean window blinds. Clean beds thoroughly. Clean bedside tables in resident's rooms, dust all shelves, removing ail articles making sure thorough cleaning is done

7.         Clean housecleaning cart. Clean any equipment used daily.

8.         Clean all rooms each week.

9.         Assist with emergency cleaning during the day as required.

10.      Mop, wax and buff hallways, living areas, and dining areas as assigned.

Functions related to supplies and equipment:

1.         Practice economy in using supplies and equipment.

2.         Dispense supplies according to need.

3.         Maintain safeguards for the care, storage, and use of supplies and equipment.

4.         Report to Administrator or DON any supplies or equipment needed, or any broken or defective equipment.

5.         See that resident rooms are prepared for new admissions.

6.         Assist in moving resident within facility.

Functions related to facility supervision:

1.         Make frequent rounds of total facility to inspect for cleanliness and order.

2.         Inspect for maintenance and refer needs to maintenance department or Administrator and/or DON.

Must attend every day of the 2 week program.

Full Time CNA position following completion and successful certification on evening or night shift.  

Essential Functions once you complete your class

Assists CNAs in their day to day functions.

Answers nurse call system to determine resident needs.

Assists residents with grooming, oral hygiene, bathing, hair, and incontinence care.

Obtains food trays and assists residents with feeding.

Assists residents with range of motion exercises, and movement to wheelchair or activity areas.

Assists residents with turning and positioning in bed.

Documents services provided

Assists residents with ambulation for short distance in facility.

Punctuality and regular attendance for assigned shifts.
